SPEEGEE SPANGENBERGER, 1976

OPENING NIGHT. "MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH."
RHODES THEATER

When the movie came to Atlanta, a group of us

put ourselves in the mood for David Bowie as
a movie star and arrived at the theater early.
We sat in the lobby and watched Speegee get
ready for the crowd to come.
Speegee was old then, but she still had two
jobs-one as docent at Rhodes Hall, a small
Museum next door, and the night shift at the
ticket stand in the movie theater.
When she died, her story ran in the paper for
a couple of days. She was famous. She was
also more than a hundred years old.
She never married.

PETER VOULKOS MAGAZINE COVER

After the workshop was finished and things were put away, we sat in
the courtyard and drank beer until a little after midnight. Voulkos said he was hungry and did anybody know a good place to have breakfast. Someone suggested the Majestic down on Ponce, and we agreed that would work for everybody. When we got there, Voulkos looked the place over approvingly, ordered pork chops and eggs and lit a cigarette while he waited. The Majestic was the most spectacularly funky greasy spoon in Atlanta at the time, and Voulkos seemed perfectly at home. When he
stirred his coffee, he watched it the same way he did his clay.
